Jessica said “Millionaires are snobs”
Years ago, my 10-year-old sister Jessica told me, “I don’t want to be a millionaire.” Surprised, I asked, “Really? You don’t want to be rich? Why is that?” With spit and vinegar, she replied, “Because millionaires are snobs.”
This innocent conversation perfectly illustrated how beliefs, even those formed in the mind of a 10-year-old, can significantly influence all our future career paths. In this case, Jessica hadn’t met any millionaires, yet her beliefs tied to money were already set in stone.
What were your beliefs about rich people at age 10?
I know I associated money with freedom and adventure.
As adults, we sometimes hold on to beliefs given to us by someone with good intentions. The real transformation comes in knowing that we can choose to reexamine these beliefs and choose to design our own reality.
One fun question I like to ask myself is “What did that person have to believe to accomplish what he did?”
Since beliefs create reality, I am open to changing my mind.
“Whether you believe you can or cannot… you’re right.” – Henry Ford
Something to Think About
- You choose a belief.
- You make decisions based on that belief.
- You take action or non-action based on those decisions.
- Then, your reality becomes a mirror of your adopted belief.
I use the word adopted. Here’s why…At some point when you were one hour, one day, one year old…you didn’t have any beliefs. You didn’t believe in this religion or that religion.
You didn’t believe you were a man, a woman, or in between. You didn’t believe anything. Everything you believe is an adopted belief, even if you were too young to know that you adopted it.
Furthermore, when I have a conversation with an adult about his present financial situation, it is common to hear the excuses – not the possibilities. Adults will convince themselves they are just victims of chance, luck, family, or bad timing. I’m wondering, “Are you one of those people who may deny you might have some limiting beliefs in this area?”
Here is a little test
If you are lacking in any area of your life – love, family, money, spirituality, health, etc. – you might have some limiting beliefs in that area.
Action Steps:
1. Watch the interview clip from where I discuss the importance of belief systems over a lifetime. The story about beliefs being the root of happiness and wealth is still true today and it was when I sat down with Lisa 15 year ago.
2. Fill in the Blanks. Discover some hidden beliefs.
I invite you to analyze one belief you learned as a child which might not still be true. Don’t hit the big stuff like “Flat Earth” or “Does God Exist?”
Just give yourself a gentle nudge to rethink your emotional reaction to phrases like
“All men are ______.
l women are ______.
Marriage is ______.
Money is _____”.
Fill in the blanks.
I find it useful to have my students take a sober look at the beliefs they’ve unconsciously accepted over the years.
